Pench is a jewel in the crown of Central Indian wildlife, a stunning teak forest that reportedly influenced Rudyard Kipling’s classic children’s tale “The Jungle Book.” Situated on the southern boundary of Madhya Pradesh, adjoining Maharashtra, the indolent Pench River flowing through the park forms an important lifeline for all forms of wildlife. Covering 758 sq. km of core area, this splendid reserve is an interesting combination of teak forests, bamboo groves and undulating grasslands. Pench is so much more than a wildlife sanctuary, it’s a well-managed ecosystem where the likes of Shere Khan (Bengal Tiger), Baloo (Sloth Bear), Bagheera (Leopard) and Akela (Indian Wolf) all lead visitors on an intimate exploration into the heart of India’s wild legacy.
The ideal time to visit Pench National Park is the winter season, from October to March as the weather remains comfortable for wildlife safari. The temperature plays between 10-25°C during the day and nights can be cold up to 5-8°C, you can spend full days exploring and bird watching here as migratory birds add their numbers to the park’s list.
Summer (April to June) makes the mercury rise up even higher to between 30°C and 45°C; it is very hot, but tiger spotting and wildlife photography are at its best during this time. As the sources of water are drying up, visitors might be able to watch tigers and other predators chancing upon waterholes and on the banks of the Pench River significantly increasing the chances of spotting tigers and other predators.

Situated near the Turia gate, Kohka Lake is an ideal place to go birding and to witness breathtaking sunsets. The refuge is an excellent place for visitors to see many of the area’s water birds and even mammals coming to drink water.
The wellspring of the park, the Pench River meanders north to south, giving birth to many beautiful vistas. The Totladoh Dam on this river results in a big reservoir attracting massive number of herbivores and varied bird life. You can take a motorboat safari to get an entirely different view of the park from the water.
An idyllic location along the banks of Pench River, Sitaghat is known for its rocky landscape and winding river. The rocks are a popular perching place for leopards and tigers. In the spring the rocky banks are bleached by white blossoms making it even more beautiful.
This is the highest point of the park providing a panoramic view of the forest around. Leopards and more reclusive nocturnal animals prefer the rocky habitat of this area. Its name is derived from the dark rocks present in the vicinity.
Situated near the park, this Pachdhar village is well-known for its tribal potters. Visiting here provides a glimpse of rural life and the opportunity to visit artisans making beautiful clay pottery on wheels.

The best time is October to June. The cool dry winter months (Oct-Mar) are comfortable and excellent for wildlife in general while in summer (April-June) it is hot but has the greatest chance of spotting a tiger because animals are attracted to waterholes.
The closest airport and railway station is Nagpur (approx. 90-100 km). Taxis are readily accessible from Nagpur to any of the park gates (Turia being the most in-demand).
Apart from the Bengal tiger other carnivores include Leopard, Sloth bear, Wild dog (Dhole), Jackal and Indian Wolf. The herbivores include Gaur (Indian Bison), Sambar, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Blue Bull (Nilgai).
Pench has few core zones namely Turia, Karmajhiri, Jamtara amongst others. It has buffer zones like Rukhad and Khawasa (Wolf Sanctuary).
