Gwalior - Orchha - Khajuraho - Bandhavgarh - Jabalpur - Panchmari - 09 Nights/10 Days
Gwalior’s tradition as a royal capital continued until the formation of present day India, with the Scindias having their dynastic seat here. The magnificent mementoes of a glorious past have been preserved with care, giving Gwalior an appeal unique and timeless. Gwalior’s history is traced back to a legend. In 8 A.D, a chieftain called SurajSen was stricken by a deadly disease. He was cured by a hermit saint, Gwalipa, and in gratitude founded a city which he named after the saint who had given him the gift of new life. The new city of Gwalior became, over the centuries, the cradle of great dynasties and with each, the city gained new dimensions from warrior kings, poets, musicians and saints, contributing to making it a capital renowned throughout the country.
Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput chieftain, RudraPratap, who chose this stretch of land along the Betwariver as an ideal site for his capital. Of the succeeding rulers, the most notable was Raja Bir Singh JuDeo who built the exquisite JehangirMahal, a tiered palace crowned by graceful chhatris. From here the view of soaring temple spires and cenotaphs is spectacular. Complementing the noble proportions of their exteriors are interiors which represent the finest flowering of the Bundelaschool of painting. In the Laxminarayan Temple and Raj Mahal, vibrant murals encompassing a variety of religious and secular themes, bring the walls and ceilings to rich life. Strewn around the area are the little shrines and memorials, each with its own poignant history, each contributing to the nostalgic beauty that is Orchha.
Khajuraho is a famous tourist and archaeological site known for its sculptured temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain patriarchs. Khajuraho was one of the capitals of the Chandela kings, who from the 9th to the 11th century CE developed a large realm, which at its height included almost all of what is now Madhya Pradesh state. Khajuraho extended over 21 sq. km and contained about 85 temples built by multiple rulers from about 950 to 1050. In the late 11th century the Chandela, in a period of chaos and decline, moved to hill forts elsewhere. Khajuraho continued its religious importance until the 14th century (IbnBatuta was impressed by it) but was afterwards largely forgotten; its remoteness probably saved it from the desecration that Muslim conquerors generally inflicted on Hindu monuments. In 1838 a British army captain, TS Burt, employed by the Asiatic Society in Calcutta, came upon information that led him to the rediscovery of the complex of temples in the jungle in Khajuraho.
Panna National Park is situated in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, at a distance of around 27 km from Khajuraho. The Panna National Park is home to some of the best wildlife species in India and is one of the better Tiger Reserves in the country. The park is known worldwide for its wild cats, including tigers as well as deer and antelope. The landscape of this rocky and uneven terrain is covered by scrubby vegetation and grass. Fauna of this park includes, apart from the tiger; striped hyena, wolf, chital, sloth bear, chinkara, and sambar.
Bandhavgarh National Park is spread over an area of 448 sq kms and has vast stretches of grasslands spread over 32 hills. It boasts of the one of highest density of tigers in the world, besides healthy population of Cheetal, Sambhar and Barking Deer. Bandhavgarh Fort scattered with remnants of the past forms the heart of the park and offers breathtaking views of the forest all around it.
Bhedaghat is a town in jabalpur district in the state Madhya Pradesh. It is situated by the side of river Yamini and is approximately 20 km from Jabalpur city. Its most famous sights are the Dhuandhar Falls, Marble Rocks, and the Yamini Veena temple.
Its major attraction is a waterfall known as Dhuandhar Falls, which looks like smoke coming out of the river and therefore it got its name as “Dhuan(smoke)-dhar(flow of water)”. Another major attraction is ‘Bandar Kodini’, when one travels in between the marble rocks in a boat, the mountains at both the sides at one point come so close that the monkeys are able to jump across them, hence the name “Bandar Kodini”. In a moonlit night, the travel between the marble rock mountains in a boat on the river Narmada is one of the popular tourist attractions here. Bhedaghat is famous for its jumpers.
Pachmarhi, Situated at 1100 m, popularly known as ‘Satpura ki Rani’ (Queen of Satpura), sits beautifully, embellished by nature and history, amidst the Satpura range. Legend says the Pandava brothers visited Pachmarhi during their exile. This beautiful region in the hills, was discovered by Captain James Forsyth in 1857.
